Creating an iBook
Creating an iBook is a rewarding but challenging task. You end up with a beautiful resource that works with iPad amazingly.
After watching the Musica Viva Pastance Group, there was one part that really stood out to me. The triple harp player began talking about enharmonics and how one that instrument the sharps and flats are not the exact same note.
This influenced me to create an iBook about tuning.
The Creation Process
19/9/15
I began planning out my iBook and what was going to go into each section. I needed to have three musical experiences throughout the iBook: performing, listening and composition. So I created each of these sections to begin with.
Then I thought what needs to go into each section, and came up with the following activities.
Listening:
- Enharmonic Notes
- Key Signatures
- Transposing Instruments
Performing:
- Getting your instrument in tune properly
- Playing with alternate tunings
- Recording a short composition / cover
Composition:
- Arranging for a transposing instrument
- Group composition for an instrument in an alternate tuning.

Today I started filming for my iBook, I set up my Nikon D5200 on a tripod, with my PreSonus condenser microphone placed just in front of the camera out of sight. The audio was going into my PreSonus audiobox USB audio interface and then I used logic for the editing to get a nice vocal sound.
I began filming my tutorial about alternate tunings and decided I wanted some interesting camera angles of my guitar so taped an action camera just below the strings.
I also created a short piece of music so I could put my tutorial into context. All this was recorded using Logic.

Today I edited the footage from the Musica Viva Pastance recording.
It took about 9 hours to download all the footage that I needed.
I used iMovie to edit all the footage together

Today I recorded a tutorial video about enharmonics on a keyboard. I set up my camera and microphone in front of my midi keyboard so that I could record vocals and the midi sound at the same time using Logic.
I also began taking photos to use throughout my iBook.
I wanted to keep the iBook looking relatively simple but eye catching so I used black and white photos of my instruments and music gear.
Some pictures used were ones that I had previously taken for this website.
25/9/15
Today I recorded my tutorial video about tuning on the violin. This was a more challenging filming as I needed a second camera angle on my left hand, and just as I was about to start filming, my little action camera's battery died.
So my iPhone jumped to help out, and I filmed my second angle with that, and then used the overlay option in iMovie to have both videos playing at the same time.
30/9/15
Today I created the composition section of my iBook, and then moved on to finalising everything.
I previewed the iBook on my iPad, and went through every page ensuring that all the links worked, the pictures were in the correct places, and there weren't any typos.
After this, I then put all the activities from my iBook into my four week lesson plan.

I originally uploaded my iBook to Google Drive, however for some reason the file split into a folder when uploaded and had troubles. So instead I looked to DropBox, which was successful.
Isabel and I looked over each others iBooks to ensure that everything worked properly.
You can download my iBook and the four week lesson plan here.
